The introduction of a driving licence smart card in South Africa is gaining momentum with the appointment of an identity and security company to oversee the roll-out of the new system.

The department of transport confirmed yesterday that Idemia was chosen as the preferred bidder to produce smart cards.

This decision followed a month-long bidding process that concluded in May last year.

"The five bidders were subjected to a thorough and transparent adjudication by the bidding committee," the department's spokesperson, Collen Msibi, said.
