The Eastern Cape department of education has suspended the principal of Osborn Secondary School after a Grade 12 pupil was allegedly assaulted for failing to pay for a school trip.

- Enkosi Selane

According to the department, the incident came to its attention after an image of the pupil's injured palm went viral on social media last Friday.

Vuyiseka Mboxela, Eastern Cape department of education spokesperson, confirmed the suspension.

"We can confirm that as the department we have suspended the Osborn Secondary School principal. The reason for that is because of the alleged corporal punishment that was meted against a pupil which, thereafter, made waves in the social media," she said.

The department launched an immediate investigation after the image circulated online.
