Gordon grateful for Mourinho praise

Newcastle - Newcastle attacker Anthony Gordon (right) said being lauded by Benfica boss Jose Mourinho after the Magpies’ Champions League win at home to the Portuguese side on Tuesday was a “big compliment”.

The 24-year-old England forward scored the first goal - his fourth in the competition in three games this season - and made the last in a 3-0 victory at St James’ Park as the Magpies overwhelmed Benfica to the delight of a crowd of more than 52 000 people.

There were plaudits aplenty for Gordon following the game but it was the words of Mourinho, who went over to talk to the former Everton frontman on the final whistle, that really hit home.

Asked what the veteran Portuguese boss had told him, Gordon replied: “He said ‘You're too much’, which is a big compliment for me because as a kid, he was my favourite manager in the world growing up.
