North East chess set for growth in 2026

GRASSROOTS North East chess has grown significantly over the last year, with more expansion expected in 2026.

The most successful competition is the Northumbria League, which includes teams from as far afield as Alnwick, Tynedale and South Shields. From 31 teams after Covid in 2022, now there are 49 teams with more than 200 players in six divisions - giving more opportunities for newcomers to try competitive play.

Underpinning this growth has been the expansion of several chess clubs. Gosforth, Newcastle, Forest Hall, South Shields, Cramlington and Alnwick are reporting more juniors and young adults playing - not just competitive games but also social or friendly games.
