THE 8th Northumbria Masters Congress, in Darlington's Dolphin Centre from August 20 to 25, promises to be an excellent opportunity for the region's up-and-coming players to test their skills against strong international opposition.

The congress includes the Masters Open with £3,000 in prizes, featuring English Grandmasters (GMs) Danny Gormally (Alnwick) and Mark Hebden (Leicester), plus International Master (IM) Guy Levin from Israel.

Other leading players include Andy Burnett (Newcastle), Billy Fellowes (Coventry) and Craig Thomson (Scotland). The IM Round Robin tournament is aimed at providing title norm opportunities for young players. This will pit English IMs Aaravamudhan Balaji and Peter Large, plus Scottish IM Angus Dunnington, against several players going for their IM titles.
