SC to hear plea for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s release on Oct 6

The matter will be heard by a bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria.

The petition comes in the wake of Wangchuk’s arrest and subsequent transfer to Jodhpur Central Jail in Rajasthan following violent protests in Ladakh. Authorities have accused Wangchuk of inciting the unrest, which occurred on September 24 in Leh, leading to the deaths of four individuals and injuries to over 80 others. His detention under the NSA — a stringent law that allows preventive detention without trial for up to a year — has sparked widespread concern and condemnation among activists, political leaders, and civil society members.
