Rivers cannot be owned by any state: DMK's TKS Elangovan

In the midst of mounting tensions and protests regarding the Cauvery water issue in Tamil Nadu, TKS Elangovan, a leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), emphasized that rivers should not be owned by any state and stressed the need for Karnataka to release water as per international agreements and Supreme Court directives.

Speaking to ANI, Elangovan asserted, “They (Karnataka) have to release water. Rivers cannot be owned by any state. They have to provide water. It is an internationally agreed settlement that water cannot be denied to lower riparian lands.” He also criticized attempts by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to politicize the issue and divide it along party lines, highlighting that it is a matter involving two states that requires resolution through appropriate channels such as the Central Water Commission.
