RAJASTHANI TRADITIONS ON A FASTING PLATE - WHOLESOME NAVRATRI DELIGHTS
The Business Guardian
|September 23, 2025
Navratri is not just a festival of devotion and celebration, but also a time of purification — both spiritual and physical.
In Rajasthan, where food is an essential part of cultural expression, the festival calls for sattvik (pure and simple) meals that are free from grains, onions, and garlic. This nine-day fast is observed with special dietary practices that are both nourishing and detoxifying. While Rajasthani cuisine is often known for its rich curries and indulgent sweets, Navratri brings out its lighter, healthier side. Here's a list of 9 healthy and delicious Navratri recipes popular in Rajasthan, ensuring taste, nutrition, and devotion go hand in hand.
A fasting staple, sabudana (tapioca pearls) is soaked and then lightly sautéed with roasted peanuts, cumin seeds, green chillies, and curry leaves. It's gluten-free, easy to digest, and high in energy. Garnish with lemon juice and coriander for a refreshing twist.
Health Tip: Use minimal oil and rock salt (sendha namak) for a sattvik version.
Made from buckwheat flour (kuttu atta), these thin, savoury pancakes are crisp on the outside and soft inside. They are packed with protein and fiber.
How to Prepare: Mix kuttu flour with grated bottle gourd (lauki), sendha namak, chopped green chillies, and a bit of water to make a thick batter. Cook like a dosa on a nonstick pan. Serve with mint-coconut chutney.
