PRESIDENT TRUMP UPENDS THE RULES BASED ORDER
The Business Guardian
|January 06, 2026
What are the chances of Greenland going the “Stars and Stripes” way from “Danebrog”—the world’s oldest flag, belonging to Denmark—in 2026? Very high, one would say.
What was thought to be a joke when Donald Trump started proclaiming that Greenland should be American territory, is increasingly looking like a distinct possibility. Especially after the brazen regime change operation that President Trump carried out in Caracas, capturing and carting off the sitting President Nicolas Maduro to the US, thus literally cocking a snook at an already frayed rules-based international order. Now he is not only speaking of reordering countries like Mexico, Cuba and Colombia to suit US interests, but is also eyeing Greenland as a possible target for American annexation. While the US or maybe its deep state, has made regime change operations one of its calling cards, no administration has made its purpose so blatantly obvious. Even George W. Bush used the fig leaf of weapons of mass destruction—WMDs that were never found—while invading Iraq. In this case, Trump and his people are upfront—it’s about Venezuela’s oil deposits. We cannot have China and Russia taking our oil, as Trump has been saying. Of course, there is no explanation as to how Venezuelan oil is America’s, unless of course the claim is based on the wild logic of everything in America’s immediate neighbourhood belongs to America. But then that’s what exactly it is—to repeat the oft repeated cliché, might is right and the US is exercising its right, unabashedly.
