Modern diet trends: Benefits vs health hazards

Over the years, several types of diets have become popular for their potential health benefits. However, every diet affects the body differently, and an unbalanced approach may also create health risks. Understanding the advantages and hazards of common diets is important before making major dietary changes.

The Mediterranean diet is based on traditional eating patterns followed in countries near the Mediterranean Sea. It emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, olive oil, nuts, and legumes while limiting processed foods and red meat. This diet is widely known for supporting heart health, reducing inflammation, and lowering the risk of diabetes and obesity. Its high antioxidant and healthy fat content may also improve brain function. However, some individuals may find the diet expensive because of the regular use of olive oil, nuts, and seafood. Excessive consumption of calorie-rich foods within the diet may also lead to weight gain if portion sizes are not controlled.

KETOGENIC DIET

The ketogenic or keto diet is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet designed to shift the body into a state called ketosis, where fat becomes the primary source of energy. Many people follow this diet for rapid weight loss and blood sugar control. It may also help reduce appetite and improve insulin sensitivity in some individuals. Despite these benefits, the keto diet may cause side effects such as fatigue, dizziness, headaches, constipation, and nutrient deficiencies due to restricted carbohydrate intake. Long-term use may also increase cholesterol levels and place stress on the kidneys in some cases.
