FRESCOES AND HAVELIS: EXPLORING MANDAWA'S ARTISTIC LEGACY
The Business Guardian
|December 03, 2025
Mandawa, located in Rajasthan's Shekhawati region, is often overlooked by travelers moving between Jaipur and Bikaner. Yet, this small town is a treasure trove of art and history, widely recognized for its havelis, or traditional mansions, adorned with intricate frescoes and murals.
Built mainly during the 18th and 19th centuries by wealthy Marwari merchant families, these structures showcase the town’s once-thriving trade and cultural prominence. The havelis are more than architecture; they are stories frozen in time, painted with scenes from mythology, folklore, historical events, and even European influences, reflecting the cosmopolitan tastes of the town’s former residents.
THE OPEN-AIR ART GALLERY
Mandawa functions as a living museum, where every street and alley feels like a canvas. Walking through its narrow lanes, visitors encounter vivid murals on walls, doors, and windows, many depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and local legends. The grandeur of the artwork, such as the romantic depictions in Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli or the architectural elegance of Murmuria Haveli, is captivating. Despite centuries of exposure to the elements, the colors and detailing remain impressive, offering a rare glimpse into the artistic brilliance of Rajasthan’s merchant class. Unlike conventional museums, Mandawa allows visitors to experience art in everyday life, where history and daily activity coexist seamlessly.
