The earliest documented cases of cancer in India date back to the 17th century. Between 1860 and 1910, several audits and cancer case series were published by Indian medical practitioners, marking the initial recognition of the disease within the subcontinent.

A landmark study by Nath and Grewal, utilizing autopsy, pathology, and clinical data between 1917 and 1932, confirmed that cancer was a common cause of death among middle-aged and elderly Indians.

In 1941, the Tata Memorial Hospital was established in Mumbai by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, serving as a cornerstone for cancer treatment and research in India. This institution laid the foundation for systematic cancer care and research, evolving into the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) in 1966, which now encompasses multiple centers across the country.

As the global understanding of cancer expanded, India actively integrated Western medical practices into its healthcare system. The adoption of radiotherapy in the mid-1920s marked a significant milestone, with radium brachytherapy being utilized for treatment. This method continued for over six decades, highlighting India's early commitment to embracing advanced medical technologies.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy became integral components of cancer treatment protocols, reflecting a blend of imported methodologies and indigenous practices. The establishment of the National Cancer Institute Act in 1937 in the United States influenced India's approach to cancer research and treatment, fostering international collaboration.
