As their lives fracture, they are tested by distance, silence, and grief.Agnes (Jessie Buckley) falls in love with William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) when he is tutoring her younger brothers in Latin to settle the debts of his bullying father.

Despite the disapproval of William's mother Mary (Emily Watson), the couple marry and raise a family in Stratford-upon-Avon comprising daughter Susanna and twins Judith and Hamnet.
