CONCERNS OVER VIOLENT INCIDENT

- By Bill Edgar Local democracy reporter

A PUB whose employees were alleged to have deceived and misled police following a brutal assault has been permitted to resume trading.

Quinn's Inn, on Spennymoor High Street, faced criticism from Durham police over their conduct and management of the incident, on November 22.

A 34 year old sustained life-threatening wounds and required urgent brain surgery following the assault at the venue around 12.30am. Police claim they only became aware of the incident after the casualty was transported to hospital.

Paul Clarke, speaking for Durham Constabulary, alleged at a Durham County Council licensing hearing: "There has been such an abject failure in all aspects that has caused us a great deal of concern. When we approached the pub, there was a wall of silence, misdirection and lies."

Two individuals, aged 21 and 23, were detained on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and have subsequently been released on bail. A police inquiry continues.
