The power of protein

Whether you're into active fitness or just looking to improve overall health, boosting your protein could be the key to a stronger body
-
When you've been doing your weekly shop, you may have noticed an increase in the number of protein-rich products stocked on supermarket shelves, from shakes and bars to yoghurts and pancakes.
According to online retailer Ocado, searches for 'high protein' have increased by a whopping 105% since last year. Once seen as fuel for bodybuilders, protein is now considered a staple part of a healthy lifestyle, proving it's is not just for fitness enthusiasts.
"Protein plays a far greater role in our health than many people realise," says VJ Hamilton, registered nutritionist and functional medicine practitioner (theautoimmunitynutritionist.com). "Beyond muscle maintenance, it's essential for hormone production, immune regulation, skin and hair repair, and bone health. In fact, research shows that adequate protein intake supports bone density and reduces the risk of fractures, particularly as we age.
"Under-consuming protein can contribute to fatigue and slower metabolic function. Many people, especially over 40, benefit from close to 1.2-1.6 grams per kilogram of bodyweight per day, depending on their health goals."
