Blue spaces are now considered vital for our health - here's how to reap the benefits

It's well known that being outdoors, particularly in green spaces such as gardens and parks, can help reduce stress and improve our mood. Now, it's also been scientifically proven that being near blue spaces such as the sea, rivers and lakes can have a similar impact.

Dr Suzanne Wylie, GP and medical advisor for IQdoctor (iqdoctor.co.uk), tells us, "Just as green spaces promote physical and mental health, blue environments can also have restorative effects. This may include benefits such as reducing stress, improving mood, encouraging physical activity and fostering social interaction."

The concept, known as blue health, is now being researched around the world. It's reported that people who live within 1km of a major blue space are often physically healthier and have better mental health than those living further away. Dr Wylie says, "People report greater relaxation and psychological restoration near blue spaces, especially coastal areas."

With 81% of people wanting to spend more time outdoors and 55% of people saying screen time is making them feel anxious*, getting outside to enjoy blue spaces could be just what the doctor ordered.
