SEX OFFENDER DIES AFTER BEING 'LET DOWN' BY JAIL CARE

Maqsood Asif had been moved to HMP Stafford from HMP Isle of Wight almost seven months before he died in hospital on November 18, 2021.

When he was transferred, Asif - who was sentenced to 18 years for sexual offences in March 2020 had been on the waiting list for heart surgery for six months.

Staff at Stafford were unaware of Asif’s heart condition until he told them upon arrival, a Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) fatal incident report said.

A few days later, his consultant from Southampton Hospital wrote to the prison to say his surgery was now “urgent”.

Asif was later referred to the local cardiology department at Stafford Hospital, but he did not get the surgery before he died.

A post-mortem concluded that Asif died from heart failure, caused by severe aortic stenosis.
