Engels aims to contribute even more to Celts next term

- SCOTT MCDERMOTT

I HAVE PLENTY SEASONS TO CHEERFUL OF BE

IT feels like everyone in Scottish football has an opinion on Arne Engels.

Even though he's still only 21, Celtic's record signing demands attention.

After all, with an £11million price tag on his head there was always going to be a level of pressure and expectation.

But ultimately the only judgments that matter are those of boss Brendan Rodgers and the player himself.

His manager is a huge fan, of course. That's why he forked out such a big fee to German side Augsburg last summer.

And as he approaches the end of his first season in Scotland, Engels is pretty pleased with his contribution as well.

At times, the Belgian has been questioned on whether he has justified what Celtic paid for him.

But so far this term he has won a trophy and has two more in the pipeline including his first-ever title.

He has performed well in the Champions League, where Rodgers' side reached the knockout phase before being narrowly beaten by Bayern Munich.

And in terms of pure numbers, Engels has 10 goals and 12 assists in all competitions to his name.

Not bad for a youngster's maiden campaign in a new country at a massive club, is it?

He's desperate to finish the job by helping Celtic to a domestic Treble.

But when Engels goes away on holiday and reflects on what he has produced, he won't be disappointed.
