US members up in arms after assets are flogged

- BY DAN VEVERS

CLASH OF THE CLAN

FURIOUS American descendants of a historic Highland clan have told of their "deep hurt" at the shock sale of its castle stronghold and lands.

Members of Clan Donald USA said they were "incredibly disappointed" at the decision by the Clan Donald Lands Trust to sell all its remaining assets, including Armadale Castle and the 22,000-acre South Sleat Estate in Skye.

The Trust was set up in 1970 to take over what remained of the clan's historic lands.

But it announced in March the sale of its lands and properties due to financial challenges.

That includes Armadale Castle, built as a mansion house for MacDonald chieftains in 1790 and now home to the beloved Clan Donald Centre.

Since the announcement, the charity has faced fierce opposition over claims clan members and the local community in Sleat, on Skye, weren't properly consulted.
