Rohl must ditch psychobabble to have a hope of taming Gers fans

RANGERS fans under stress - like they are now - tend to be quick to react and slow to reflect.

Particularly when they might have cause to ponder the error of their own ways.

But there are times when an immediately negative response is the only human instinct possible - because it is the right one.

Thursday night in Norway was one of them.

Rangers' new head coach Danny Rohl had the benefit of the doubt from the time of his appointment on Monday until his pre-match press conference in Bergen on Wednesday.

And then he came out with the kind of psychobabble the fans thought had left town when his predecessor Russell Martin took his last dip in Loch Lomond before picking up his severance pay.

The circumstances under which Rohl was employed in the first place seem obvious to those of us with a cynical frame of mind.

Steven Gerrard refused to accept the job for undisclosed reasons. Kevin Muscat then had an 11th-hour change of mind.

Rohl was consequently parachuted into Ibrox at 24 hours' notice after having withdrawn his name from consideration the week before.

Panic, in other words.
