The denial of identity cards with proper recognition was discriminatory to the nuns, says Supreme Court
-
(UCAN) Buddhist nuns in Sri Lanka have won the right to obtain national identity cards bearing their cherished title 'Bhikkhuni' (nun), following a decade-long legal battle.
On June 17, the Supreme Court ordered the government to immediately issue identity cards for ordained Buddhist nuns, known as Bhikkhuni.
The top court also termed the denial over the years a violation of equal rights under the law.
Sri Lanka has about 8,000 ordained nuns living in Buddhist monasteries and nunneries.
The issuance of cards for Buddhist nuns has been a debated matter for years.
