AFTERMATH OF CYCLONE DITWAH
Sunday Island
|February 01, 2026
Just like the tsunami that hit Sri Lanka in 2004, the people of the affected areas were taken unawares when Cyclone Ditwah struck many parts of the island.
This was the worst disaster that Sri Lanka faced after the tsunami. However, the lives lost this year were very much fewere than the 40,000 or so the tsunami took.
But the cyclone damage was much more extensive as more parts of the island were hit than by the tsunami. Though the number of lives lost was less, the other damage was more extensive, with many being displaced and families losing their homes. This was because in addition to floods in many areas, there were more landslides than ever before.
