While Cancun's beaches and resorts are the main attraction, there's a whole other world beneath the surface that many visitors miss.

Cenotes - natural freshwater pools formed from collapsed limestone caves - were thought by the Mayans to be connected to the underworld.

Thankfully, I wasn’t taken there after jumping into one - despite the 16ft drop.

Elsewhere in Cancun sits Rio Secreto, which translates to secret river.

This underground cave system, only discovered in 2006 by a man chasing an iguana, is a breathtaking natural wonder.

When he stumbled upon the entrance, no one could have imagined that it would open into a vast, hidden world of glittering stalactites, stalagmites and crystal-clear waters.

Today, the cave is an ecotourism destination, attracting around 100 visitors every day.

I had the privilege of visiting Rio Secreto during my trip and it was nothing short of magical.
