New Hamas hostage deal offers hopes for ceasefire

HAMAS yesterday offered to release 10 living Israeli hostages and the bodies of 18 more in exchange for more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, in what is being seen as the most concrete move yet towards a ceasefire.
The proposal, which follows an initiative by Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, includes a 60-day truce during which the hostages would be released gradually, rather than in two main batches as initially suggested by the US plan.
However, an additional Hamas demand for a permanent end to the war has led Israeli officials to describe the offer as an "effective rejection" of a ceasefire.
