Joy as MPs vote to impeach Yoon

HUNDREDS of thousands of South Koreans celebrated in capital city Seoul yesterday after the country's embattled President Yoon Suk Yeol was finally impeached by MPs.

The massive crowd braved the bitter cold and surrounded the National Assembly, calling for Yoon to go after his surprise declaration of martial law nearly two weeks ago.

They cheered and hugged each other as news of the vote by MPs to remove the president for "insurrectionary acts undermining the constitutional order," was relayed.

The crowd, which waved banners and placards and brandished colourful K-pop glow sticks, was told by a lead activist on stage: "We have preserved the constitutional order! "
