FIVE-MINUTE GUIDE TO... APPEALING STATE BENEFIT CUTS
LAST WEEK'S controversial move by Chancellor Rachel Reeves to slash sickness and disability benefits by £4.8billion is a massive blow for millions of disabled and elderly people who fear losing urgently needed financial support.
Around 3.2 million families will be hit, losing on average £1,720 a year in 2029 and 2030, plunging 250,000 into poverty.
But if you lose entitlement to Personal Independence Payment, Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit or other benefits, you may have legal grounds to challenge the decision, said Daniel McAfee, UK lawyer and head of legal operations at Lawhive. "Appeals are free. You don't have to pay court fees to challenge a benefit decision."
But you must appeal within one month of receiving a "mandatory reconsideration" decision, as late appeals may not be accepted. McAfee said you can track and manage your case online, making the process easier.
Before launching an appeal, you must ask first for a mandatory reconsideration.
