NICE SURPRISE A big bonus is always welcome
GETTING a workplace bonus or earning a bit of extra cash in retirement is always welcome, but as always, HMRC is hovering.
Any one-off payment can cause problems, whether it's a bonus, overtime, commission, side hustle, or a pensioner earning extra income from casual work.
We're now deep into bonus season. Just over half of all workplace bonuses are paid between December and the peak month of March, just before the annual April 6 deadline. The typical UK bonus is £2,000, according to the Office for National Statistics, with the biggest payouts going to people aged 40 to 49, corporate managers and directors, London workers and men.
Sarah Coles, head of personal finance at Hargreaves Lansdown, warned that even though many businesses are struggling, bonuses are alive and well.
