Reaction to court's call on gender
Stirling Observer
|April 25, 2025
People in Stirling are absorbing the implications of last week's ruling by the UK Supreme Court on how women should be defined in law.
-
Members of the local LGBTQ+ community are raising their concerns over the ruling.
And some Stirling councillors are looking for clarity from the local authority over use of single sex spaces, including in schools.
Councillor Thomas Heald has called on Stirling Council to "urgently review" its policy on single sex spaces following the decision of the UK Supreme Court that a person with a full gender recognition certificate which recognises their gender as 'female' is not a woman for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010.
The verdict on how a woman should be defined in law was announced following a legal battle involving the Scottish Government.
The UK Supreme Court has announced that the Equality Act's definition of a woman is based on biological sex.
