E-TRUCK INCENTIVE SCHEME

State Times

|

July 12, 2025

In a bold push towards clean mobility and sustainable freight transport, the Government of India has launched the e-Truck Incentive Scheme, a focused initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric trucks (e-trucks) in the country.

The scheme marks a strategic expansion of India's electric vehicle (EV) policy framework, which so far has largely concentrated on passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers. With this initiative, the government seeks to decarbonize the commercial freight sector a major contributor to vehicular emissions - while also reducing logistics costs and dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Electric trucks offer an eco-friendly alternative to diesel-powered commercial vehicles, which despite making up only about 5% of the total vehicle population, contribute nearly 40% of vehicular emissions in India. These emissions not only harm the environment but also impact public health and urban air quality. The e-Truck Incentive Scheme is designed to reverse this trend by encouraging fleet operators, logistics companies, and transport entrepreneurs to switch to electric alternatives through a comprehensive package of financial and policy incentives.
