A MUCH-LOVED Swansea social club is to be completely knocked down almost two years after a huge sinkhole appeared outside it.

Club is to be pulled down due to huge sinkhole

But there are hopes the club can be rebuilt in the future finances allowing.

In August 2023, parts of the ground collapsed outside Cwmfelin Social Club in Swansea, causing extensive damage to the club and its car park.

There is a collapsed culvert some 10m below the club, a sewer and the remains a tramline which served the former Cwmfelin steel works.

Welsh Water said the collapsed culvert damaged the main trunk sewer, which required it to rig up a temporary sewer system running from the grounds of the nearby Libanus Chapel site, along the pavement of Carmarthen Road and underneath the railway bridge, and then eastwards to a main sewer connection point.

It was initially hoped that the club would only need to be closed for a few weeks while safety works were being carried out but 23 months later there has been almost no visible progress to rectify the issue.

However, the club's secretary Mike Kennedy told us there might be light at the end of the tunnel.
