Why Stellies are not just a selling club

|August 07, 2025
Stellenbosch FC's meteoric rise in South African football is no fluke. Once a modest outfit tucked away in the Cape Winelands, the club has evolved into one of the PSL's most respected institutions, built on discipline, ambition, and a long-term strategy that defies the chaos often seen in local football.
-
At the heart of this transformation is CEO Rob Benadie and his leadership team, whose steady vision has steered Stellies away from the pitfalls that plague many local sides. While other clubs grapple with coaching merry-go-rounds, financial instability, and shortsighted recruitment, Stellenbosch FC are quietly crafting a blueprint for sustainable success. Integrity, consistency, and strategic planning aren't just buzzwords here, they're the foundation of a club culture that's built to last. The Siya crew recently attended a media briefing hosted by the South African Football Journalists Association (SAFJA), where Benadie offered rare insight into the club's philosophy and operational model. His message was clear: Stellies aren't just aiming to compete, they're building something enduring.
What the Siya crew has been told...
Seven years ago, Stellenbosch FC took over the status of Vasco Da Gama and entered the professional ranks with a commitment to development over quick fixes. They've stuck to that. Their growth has been organic, not forced. In that time, they've turned from relegation battlers to cup contenders and league dark horses, all while operating within a sustainable structure.
"We said then that we want to really take development seriously," Benadie explained. "We're not going to purchase a winning team, we're going to try and develop it."
Today, the club is being praised for doing exactly that. From producing top talent like Iqraam Rayners, Antonio van Wyk and Jayden Adams to competing in back-to-back domestic cup competitions, Stellenbosch are proof that with patience and planning, local clubs can thrive.
Not just a selling club, a smart club
Many fans have labelled Stellies as a "selling club" after high-profile departures such as Junior Mendieta, Adams, and Rayners. But Benadie was quick to challenge that label.

Now that Pirates have contributed 9 players to the national team, the same fate that befell Sundowns could visit the Soweto team at the end of the AFCON.

South Americans are very fragile
Last weekend we saw Orlando Pirates make history by becoming the first Carling Knockout champions to beat the All-Stars team, after both Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC failed to do so in the previous two seasons. Pirates were forced to play without several of their regulars as they are in camp in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's charges beat coach Manqoba Mngqithi's team 2-0 to be crowned champions, for the second time in a week. Congratulations to Bucs as they close the year on a high note.
