Chiefs' contract conundrum

As we enter the final stretch of the season, Kaizer Chiefs have some big calls to make on their squad.

Chiefs' contract conundrum

Some others under threat

At least eight players appear to be coming to the end of their contracts (including one loanee) and the board must think carefully about who to keep and who to release. In the PSL, contracts are infamously difficult to navigate. Some players have unreported options in their deals, and signing a three-year contract does not mean you can't be released after just a year. Ask Bongani Sam! So, which of the eight players should be retained for next season? For every decision, there is a knock-on effect for someone else in the squad or for a young player hoping to break through. Soccer Laduma gives a case-by-case assessment of the pros and cons of renewing each contract, while also asking whether another handful of players may be worried about their futures.

As mentioned, having an active contract does not mean that a settlement can't be agreed for an early release. Quite a few players in the squad may be concerned about whether they may be released once this campaign is concluded. Tashreeq Morris signed a two-and-a-half-year contract when he arrived, meaning he is signed up until 30 June 2027. He is one who could be released early.

Nkanyiso Shinga may also be concerned as Bongani Sam signed a three-year deal but was allowed to leave after one season. Perhaps a loan move is on the cards for Shinga.

Then you have some players who are entering the final year of their contract. Those include Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Brandon Petersen, who had an option triggered to secure his services until 2027. He may be eager to enter talks with the club for a longer contract and greater security.

The ball fell into our court

Delmain Faver: Sundowns lost out on all the domestic cups, but you were able to redeem yourselves in the end and take the big fish. Would you say that winning the CAF Champions League made up for losing the league title?

Mbule gone! What next?

Orlando Pirates confirmed the departure of Sipho Mbule after just one season with the club. The midfielder leaves the Buccaneers under a bit of a dark cloud with many stories doing the rounds of social media platforms, as was the case with his departures from SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United, where he spent a season on loan from the Brazilians. The bad press around the 28-year-old midfielder, which comes from various media sources, is surely not good for his career, and this could see clubs being concerned about signing him or offering a long-term deal for his services. With the transfer window opening at the start of July, Soccer Laduma looks into some challenges he could face and where he could end up playing his football.

We got to the top at the right time

Winning automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership for Kruger United was not only about what happened on the pitch. Off the pitch, the club put together a team of individuals who played a role in making sure that the team was running properly to achieve their goals this season. One of those individuals is Sporting Director Elasto Kapowezha, a man with tons of experience from working at various clubs since retiring from the game many years ago. Kruger won promotion and now Kapowezha has the big task of ensuring they are well prepared for the top-flight. Soccer Laduma’s Tshepang Mailwane met up with Kruger’s Sporting Director to talk about how the club managed to win promotion to the Betway Premiership and what the plans are for the upcoming campaign.
