Changing coaches doesn't help

I've been at Cape Town City as an assistant coach and it's a well-run club. John Comitis is committed to the club; he loves it and everything is done professionally.

What's happening on the football pitch is really surprising, but at the same time, changing coaches doesn't help. Sometimes you need to dig deeper before changing a coach. I know it's about the results, but before that there should be a cause. That for me has been a bit of a setback. From my experience, at City you work with players from very different and diverse backgrounds. It's different cultures coming together, so it starts with Comitis in terms of appointing the head coach. At City, I played a role where I would understand and appreciate the players' different cultures and backgrounds. For instance, a player like Mpho Makola would come to me and say, "Ey coach, I don't understand why I am not playing." Then I would put him in a position where he understood it was not about him only, but the team as a whole. He understood, got a chance and, when he got it, made sure he delivered. So, it's about experience and that ability to put those different cultures under one roof and ensure they fight for a common goal. I mean, coaching is more than one thing: you've got to be a father figure, a psychologist and have to know how difficult it is to manage players from different backgrounds. Some players are very fragile, and you have to know how to handle them, while others are strong by nature. So, it is important to make the players, irrespective of their backgrounds, understand that it's about Cape Town City, about the jersey, more than anything else. The more Cape Town City as a club does better, the better it is for individual players too. What I am saying is that coaches should understand that our players come from diverse and different backgrounds, and their behaviours and reactions to certain situations are not the same.
