As has been established on these pages many times over the years there are many tricky tests to navigate on signing up to be a parent.

Dealing with an elderly relative making a politically incorrect joke at the dinner table or the time we found ourselves setting up for the day on a nudist beach on holiday.

But one parental rite of passage caught us cold last week while sitting around watching television together.
