Scots dismantle United States to record their biggest win in Murrayfield's 100-year history

SCOTLAND coach Gregor Townsend hailed his team's “outstanding” display last night as they put the USA to the sword. The Scots ran in 13 tries to rack up the third biggest win in their history.

Townsend is well aware that tries will be a lot harder to come by on Saturday, when the All Blacks come to town. But he still reckoned that this was close to being the ideal start to his team's four-game Autumn Nations Series campaign.

He said: “I thought the effort was outstanding. Next week will be a different opposition, one of the top teams in the world.

“But what we worked on in training, we got that out against a different opposition.”

Darcy Graham grabbed a hat-trick inside 50 minutes and ended the evening level with Edinburgh teammate Duhan van der Merwe on Scotland's all-time try-scoring list on 34. Van der Merwe - who had begun the day one ahead of Graham - celebrated his 50th cap with two touchdowns.

Glasgow Warriors' Jamie Dobie was another hat-trick scorer and was named man of the match.

The final score was bettered only by an 89-0 win against Ivory Coast way back in 1995 and a 100-8 victory over Japan in 2004. And it was the biggest ever win at Murrayfield, which is celebrating its centenary as the national stadium this year.
