KEMI Badenoch’s defence of the triple lock is welcome as this safeguard against destitution in old age comes under attack from policy wonks who spend their days looking at spreadsheets but know nothing of the hardship faced by Britain’s elderly.

People who have paid their taxes through their working lives deserve a retirement in which they will not just escape poverty, but enjoy each day to the full.

This is a chance for the country to express gratitude to parents and grandparents who toiled in jobs, nursed children and in some cases defended our freedom.
