Chancellor Rachel Reeves has said it is “essential” that Britain increases its airport capacity to ensure goods made here can be exported around the world.

She added that the Government was “absolutely determined” to seize the opportunities that come from being an open trading economy. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said she was pleased to have received the Heathrow expansion proposals, describing them as a significant step towards unlocking growth, creating jobs and delivering “vital” national infrastructure.

She said the Government would consider the plans this summer, with the aim of reviewing a national airports policy later this year.

This would provide the basis for granting consent for new runways, ensuring legal, environmental and climate obligations are met. But trust in politicians appears to have run out in the villages around Heathrow after years of flip-flopping.

Before the 2010 election, then Tory leader David Cameron promised: “No ifs, no buts, no third runway.” Then his successor Theresa May forced a Commons vote on supporting the extension, which Labour opposed but now wholeheartedly backs.

Mr Melville said: “We're sick of lying politicians. I don’t believe anything they or Heathrow say.
