University liver team's cancer breakthrough

A TEAM of Scots researchers may have identified a breakthrough in preventing the progression of fatty liver disease.

Glasgow Caledonian University cancer experts discovered a scientific pathway that could prevent the illness from becoming liver cancer.

It is believed a Western diet high in fat and sugar is one of the main causes.

Scientists said cases of the cancer arising from underlying fatty liver disease are on the rise but there are no effective therapies due to a lack of understanding of what is involved.
