Trump's love for Royal Family key to US trade deal
Scottish Daily Express
|April 16, 2025
THE White House is “working very hard” on a trade deal with the UK — thanks partly to President Donald Trump’s love of the Royal Family, according to his Vice President JD Vance.
An agreement was still on the cards, despite Mr Trump’s 10% trade tariff on most British goods and 25% on car imports.
Mr Vance said: “The president really loves the United Kingdom. He loved the Queen. He admires and loves the King.”
Sir Keir Starmer presented Mr Trump with an invitation from the King for a state visit to Britain when he visited the White House in February. The monarch was still Prince of Wales when he met Mr Trump during his last state visit to the UK in 2019.
Mr Vance also insisted America was committed to its alliance with the UK and Europe.
The top priority of Sir Keir Starmer’s Government is to persuade America to eliminate or slash tariffs on cars — £9billion worth of British-made vehicles were sold in the US last year.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is said to have made Britain, Australia, South Korea, India and Japan the top targets for new trade deals.
