IT is to be welcomed that Scotland has become the first country in the United Kingdom to offer a vital test for newborns.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic condition which causes progressive muscle wastage.
Now every child born in Scotland will receive a test for the disease within days of their birth.
