Search for US pilot lost 81 years ago

HUNDREDS of volunteers are helping to search for the remains of a hero US pilot who died in a crash in the UK during the Second World War.

Second Lieutenant Lester Leo Lowry was just 23 when his P-47D Thunderbolt fighter jet dived into farmland during manoeuvres in January 1944-he did not bail out.

A six-week project in North Essex, led by Cotswold Archaeology with the US Defense PoW/ ΜΙΑ Accounting Agency, is looking for debris. Any remains of 2nd Lt Lowry will be repatriated to the US.
