Trans row nurse vows to contest tribunal result as campaigners blast 'made up' quote in ruling
SANDIE PEGGIE has declared that she “will not wheesht” as she vowed to appeal her employment tribunal result.
The visibly emotional nurse spoke at a press conference in Dundee alongside her lawyer Margaret Gibbon where she thanked all of her supporters. She also blasted the fact her trade union, the Royal College of Nursing, "failed her when she needed them most".
Ms Peggie won the central part of her case against NHS Fife, with the tribunal ruling that she was harassed by her employer in a number of ways. She was suspended after complaining about a transgender doctor using a female changing room at Kirkcaldy's Victoria Hospital on Christmas Eve in 2023.
But all of the other claims in her case were dismissed, including those against Dr Beth Upton.
The judgment has sparked widespread concern as it appeared to undermine the Supreme Court ruling on the right to single-sex spaces.
It declared that the definition of a woman wasn't relevant, and that biological men can use female facilities as long as no one complains about them and depending on how they presented.
Other aspects of the 312-page document were also brought into question, and yesterday it was announced that the wording would be corrected. Critics said it used a "made-up" quote to defend the position of dismissing Ms Peggie's claims of sexual harassment and discrimination because of her gender critical views.
