Payout for border guard who broke ankle in Channel rescue

A BORDER guard who claimed he was forced to retire after breaking his ankle while rescuing Channel migrants has won an £80,000 court fight with the Home Office.

Alan Quartermain, 66, was on his third rescue of the day 14 hours after starting his shift when he was injured escorting a paramedic on to his boat.

The Border Force Marine Command officer told the judge he was called out at 2am after “a particularly busy day” when his team had been “constantly backwards and forwards” rescuing people from small boats.
