Here's the vibe about word of the year, 2025

THE modern software phrase “vibe coding” has been selected as Collins Dictionary Word of the Year for 2025.

Meaning the use of artificial intelligence to translate natural language into computer code, the term was chosen as it “captures how language is evolving alongside technology”.

Experts at Collins said the choice reflected a marked rise in usage since the term’s first reported appearance in February.

The phrase is said to have been coined originally by Andrej Karpathy, 39, formerly director of Al at Tesla.

Alex Beecroft, managing director of Collins, said: “The selection of vibe coding as Word of the Year perfectly captures how language is evolving alongside technology.
