Farmers turn to glamping over tax grab

FARMERS are increasingly turning their land into glamping sites in a bid to boost their income in the face of potentially crippling inheritance tax changes.

Currently, farmland and related buildings can qualify for 100% relief from IHT. However, new rules next year will cap this at £1million per estate, with any excess taxed at 20%. Farmers are now scrambling to find new ways to bring in money before IHT must be paid, such as turning their land into campsites.

College Farm, in Aldeby, Norfolk, owned by Lucy and Marcus Daniels, now hosts glamping experiences run by holiday company Feather Down.

Slamming the “destructive” IHT reforms, Lucy said: "Working on a farm is a way of life, not a job. We can’t just decide to walk away or resign.
