UKRAINIANS yearn for peace but they do not want a ceasefire which hands a de facto victory to Vladimir Putin. Such a nightmare scenario has been avoided and we look to the next stage of talks with cautious optimism.

President Trump’s much-hyped phone call with Vladimir Putin did not deliver an instant peace deal and we should be wary of the Kremlin’s machinations. When the Russian dictator decides he wants to halt the war he must not be allowed to set the terms of the final settlement.
