EVERY city has its rough patches, but few are exposed to the kind of dangers that befall Kyiv’s Lukyanivka neighbourhood.

- JOHN MARONE

'28 missile strikes but I'm not moving'

"Twenty eight missile strikes so far," said Denis, a manager for a chain of mini bakeries that sells hot rolls and coffee on the main square.

He’s standing near one of his boarded up outlets following the most recent air attack, which took place last week.

"We lost some equipment but the strike was in the middle of the night so no one was at work yet," he explained.

It was the 10th air attack endured by the neighbourhood since Russia first began pounding the Ukrainian capital with cruise and ballistic missiles almost three and a half years ago.

And there has been little respite since.

All around the mini-bakery are other shops with tattered facades and boarded-up windows. A large brick building across the street has had a hole smashed into it.
