Throughout her remarkable career, she decisively challenged both sexism and racism, dedicating her life to uplifting the disadvantaged in her community as a healthcare provider and a politician.
Born in 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Allen was one of three children who thrived in her hometown for most of her life. Her father, Sidney S. Allen, Sr., was a self-employed tailor, while her mother, Mrs. Sidney S. Allen, was the only family member to graduate from high school. As a single parent, she took on the responsibility of raising a child named Kathy Ann, whose parents had passed away shortly after her birth.
