Simple Steps towards Sustainability

In today's fast-paced world, the choices we make daily affect not only our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing but also the environment, climate, and other species.

As defined by the United Nations Brundtland Commission, sustainability is the practice of meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. Moving toward sustainability is not solely about saving the planet; it also significantly enhances our safety and health. The scale of environmental challenges can often feel overwhelming, leading many to believe that individual actions cannot make a difference. However, this article aims to demonstrate that meaningful change is possible if each of us becomes more environmentally conscious and adopts green initiatives in our daily lives.

I was recently inspired to write this article after an experience at an ATM in Kolkata. During my transaction, a message appeared on the screen stating, "AS PER OUR 'GO GREEN INITIATIVE,' WE HAVE DECIDED TO GO PAPERLESS AT OUR ATMs; HENCE, RECEIPT CANNOT BE GENERATED." This is a prime example of a green initiative that can have a significant impact on sustainability, as it helps reduce the vast amount of paper wasted in ATM receipts, which are often discarded immediately. Encouraging digital banking and supporting such initiatives can further reduce paper waste. When banks, financial institutions, and other organizations adopt such practices, they contribute to waste reduction and environmental protection, fostering more sustainable living.
