Use Bumrah early to break England’s back, says Gavaskar

LEGENDARY Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has advised his nation to deploy Jasprit Bumrah for two overs during the powerplay of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semifinal against England tomorrow.

Speaking ahead of the clash at the Wankhede Stadium (start 3.30pm), Gavaskar noted that early breakthroughs from the fast-bowling spearhead could derail the opposition before they find their rhythm.

Bumrah holds the second-best economy rate among bowlers who have delivered more than seven overs in the Super 8, having conceded only three sixes in the entire tournament.

While India have used him flexibly as a “trump card” at decisive junctures, Gavaskar believes a more aggressive start is key to stopping England’s top order.

“I do believe that he should be bowling at least two overs in the powerplay,” Gavaskar said.
